High-functioning anxiety

High-functioning anxiety isn't a medical diagnosis. People use it to describe anxiety that sits behind a life that looks, from the outside, completely under control.

You're the organised one, the one who never misses a deadline. Inside, you're running on worry.

What high-functioning anxiety can look like Two stacked panels. On the outside, people see someone calm, busy and reliable. On the inside there is constant worry, a racing mind and trouble switching off. WHAT OTHERS SEE Calm, busy, reliable Always on time, always prepared, the one people count on WHAT IT FEELS LIKE Worry that never stops A racing mind, over-checking, trouble switching off

Signs of high-functioning anxiety

  • You over-prepare, and reread emails several times before sending
  • You say yes to everything, then lie awake about it
  • Rest makes you restless, so you stay busy
  • You replay conversations at night, looking for what you got wrong
  • Anything less than perfect feels like failing
  • You need reassurance, but hate asking for it
  • Your body carries it: tight shoulders, headaches, a churning stomach
  • Small changes of plan throw you more than you'd admit

Why it's easy to miss

Because you keep going, nobody worries about you, including you. The anxiety even gets rewarded. Being careful and conscientious looks like a strength at work, so you get more of the same.

The cost tends to show up somewhere else: sleep, health, relationships, or burning out after years of running on adrenaline.

What helps

Notice the "what if" thoughts, and how much of your day they drive. The anxiety cycle explains why giving in to them keeps them coming back.

Practise "good enough" on things that don't matter much. Send the email after one read. Leave the dishes until morning. Notice that nothing terrible happens.

Build in time that isn't meant to be useful. A walk with no destination. Something you do just because you like it.

Look after the body side. Slower breathing, especially a longer out-breath, can turn the alarm down enough for you to think.

And tell someone. High-functioning anxiety depends on nobody knowing.

How counselling helps

In sessions, we look at what the anxiety has been doing for you. Often it started as a way of staying safe or keeping other people happy, and it worked, which is why it's hard to let go of. Understanding that makes it easier to ease off, at a pace that feels manageable.

Counselling isn't a medical treatment. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, appetite or health, please see your GP as well.
